Yoga - Sat Chit Ananda

Meditation

What is chit? Chit means 'heart' or 'consciousness'

In all forms of yoga, chit, also cit, is one of the three attributes of Brahman or Consciousness - sat chit ananda - being consciousness bliss. Consciousness is the essential quality of your self. If you are not conscious you do not exist and also nothing else exists. Existence and non-existence are concepts which arise in consciousness. Everything arises from consciousness, your consciousness, but your consciousness does not arise from anywhere. It is impossible to see the start or end of consciousness.

There are a number of different forms of meditation and yoga practices which can quieten the mind to leave only silent consciousness, without the interference of thought and concepts : zen, vipassana, hatha yoga, bhakti yoga, jnana yoga, raja yoga, ashtanga yoga, advaita, Vedanta, Buddhism etc... .

There are also a number of teachers of advaita (non-duality) teaching in various places around the world. Our advice is to choose a cheap one ! Lots of teachers charge vast amounts of money for what is basically sitting on a cushion and minding your own business. Don't be taken in, go for the shareware or freeware version.

The greatest teacher of advaita in the twentieth century was Ramana Maharshi who lived a life of poverty in Tiruvannamalai in India. His teachings are available online free of charge. Basically you fix your attention on the feeling of 'I', in silence without uttering the thought 'I' and things work themselves out without your intervention. Silence is beyond doubt.
